So much energy is devoted to Albert Pike that we neglect the Black warriors for freedom. MWGM Lewis Hayden was one of the early conductors of the underground rail road. Robert Smalls was a Civil War legend and political leader during Reconstruction. the 54th U.S. Colored Regiment had many PHA Masons fighting for freedom. Phoenix Lodge #1 was the home of the 62nd U.S. Colored Troops. Also there were PHAs in the 9th and 10th Calvary,and the Tuskegee Airmen. So were civil rights lawyers Wiley Branton (32 deg.)and Thurgood Marshall (33 deg.).
